Shimpo Pottery Wheel Review (VL-Lite vs VL-Whisper)

Shimpo is the other big name in studio wheels, and it takes a different approach from Brent. Instead of one frame with three motors, Shimpo sells four quite different wheels, from a 25 lb tabletop to a beltless, direct-drive floor wheel that's famous for being quiet.

The question most buyers ask is whether to get the light, belt-driven VL-Lite or the heavier, direct-drive VL-Whisper. This Shimpo pottery wheel review answers that, then covers the RK-Whisper and the tabletop Aspire. The short version: the VL-Whisper is the better long-term wheel, and the VL-Lite is the smarter buy if you throw small and need to move your wheel.

We haven't tested these wheels hands-on. Specs come from Shimpo's own product pages, cross-checked against dealer listings and owner feedback.

Quick picks

  • Shimpo VL-Whisper: Best Shimpo overall. Best for indoor home studios that want full-size capacity without belt noise.
  • Shimpo VL-Lite: Best lightweight Shimpo. Best for beginners and small spaces where the wheel gets moved.
  • Shimpo RK-Whisper: Most compact direct drive. Best for potters who want Whisper power in a smaller footprint.
  • Shimpo Aspire: Best tabletop Shimpo. Best for small pots, tiny studios and adaptive throwing with a hand lever.

Where to buy: Shimpo wheels are sold through dealers, not Amazon. The Amazon-available alternatives are the Speedball Big Boss for the Whisper models and the Speedball Artista for the VL-Lite and Aspire.

Shimpo wheels compared

Model Best for Motor Drive Centering Wheel head Speed Weight
VL-Whisper Full-size, quiet 1/2 HP, 400 W Direct drive, brushless 100 lb 14 in, bat-pin drilled 0–250 rpm 120 lb
VL-Lite Light and portable 100 W, reversible Belt, auto-tension 25 lb 12 in 0–250 rpm 51 lb
RK-Whisper Compact direct drive 1/2 HP, 400 W Direct drive, brushless 100 lb 12 in, bat-pin drilled 0–250 rpm 116 lb
Aspire Tabletop 100 W DC Not specified 20 lb 7 in, bat pins 0–230 rpm 25 lb

All four carry a 5-year warranty from Shimpo. All of them warn that highly acidic clays can damage the aluminum wheel head, and Shimpo recommends throwing on a bat whenever you can.

Shimpo VL-Lite vs VL-Whisper: the main decision

These two wheels look similar and share the "VL" name, but they're built for different potters.

VL-Lite VL-Whisper
Motor 100 W reversible 1/2 HP (400 W) brushless DC
Drive Belt with automatic tensioning Direct drive, no belt
Centering capacity 25 lb 100 lb
Wheel head 12 in 14 in, drilled for bat pins
Speed 0–250 rpm 0–250 rpm
Pedal Remote foot pedal Remote foot pedal
Dimensions (as listed) 22 x 28 x 21 in 23 1/8 x 27 1/2 x 22 3/4 in
Weight 51 lb 120 lb
Pacemaker warning No Yes

Power and capacity

The Whisper has four times the motor wattage and four times the centering rating. That gap matters once you throw more than about 5 lb at a time. Shimpo says the Whisper holds a set speed at low rpm even with 100 lb of clay on the head, which is exactly where a weaker wheel bogs down. For 1 to 3 lb mugs and bowls, the VL-Lite has enough.

Noise and feel

With no belt, the Whisper is quieter, and Shimpo says the head stops the moment you release the pedal, with no coasting. That instant stop makes trimming and decorating feel more precise. The VL-Lite is belt-driven. Shimpo still calls it very quiet, but it won't match a direct-drive motor.

Size and portability

At 51 lb, the VL-Lite can live in a closet and come out for sessions. The 120 lb Whisper can't. It does have adjustable legs that Shimpo says can be removed for storage or tabletop use, and optional extension legs raise it to 35 to 37 inches for throwing standing up.

Which to buy

Choose the VL-Lite if you're a beginner, have limited space or throw mostly small pieces. Choose the VL-Whisper if this is your long-term wheel, you plan to throw larger forms, or noise matters because you share your home. If you're on the fence and have the space, the Whisper is the one you won't outgrow.

The Shimpo wheels, reviewed

Shimpo VL-Whisper: best Shimpo overall

Who it's for: home potters who want a full-size wheel that's quiet enough for an apartment or shared house.

The VL-Whisper is Shimpo's flagship. The direct-drive, brushless DC motor is rated at 1/2 HP (400 W) and 100 lb of centering, with 0–250 rpm from a remote foot pedal and clockwise or counter-clockwise rotation. The 14-inch light alloy head is drilled for bat pins. Shimpo also points out a handy detail: with the pedal at stop, the head turns freely like a banding wheel, which is useful for decorating.

The trade-offs are weight and two warnings on Shimpo's page. The wheel weighs 120 lb (147 lb shipped). Shimpo says it may be harmful to a person with a pacemaker, and that acidic clays can damage the aluminum head. The warranty is 5 years, half the length of a Brent's.

Pros

  • Direct drive: no belt to slip, stretch or replace
  • Quiet, with an instant stop when you release the pedal
  • 14-inch head drilled for bat pins
  • Removable legs and optional standing-height extension legs

Cons

  • Pacemaker warning rules it out for some users
  • 120 lb, so freight delivery and little portability
  • 5-year warranty versus 10 years on Brent and Speedball floor wheels

Where to buy: Shimpo sells the VL-Whisper through ceramic supply dealers, not on Amazon. Amazon-available alternative: the Speedball Big Boss. Speedball lists a 1.0 peak HP motor rated for 175 lb of clay, a 14-inch head, a 0–240 rpm foot pedal, a two-part splash pan and a 10-year warranty on new wheels, twice the length of Shimpo's. Speedball says the motor runs quietly but doesn't describe it as direct drive, so don't expect the Whisper's beltless design.

Shimpo VL-Lite: best lightweight Shimpo

Who it's for: beginners, small-space potters and anyone who has to put the wheel away between sessions.

Shimpo lists a 100 W reversible motor, a 12-inch head, 0–250 rpm and a 25 lb centering capacity. It's belt-driven with automatic belt tensioning and has a built-in breaker that protects the motor from overload. The remote foot pedal works in any throwing position, and the motor reverses for left- and right-handed potters.

At 51 lb (85 lb shipped), the VL-Lite is the most practical "real" floor-style wheel to move around. It's the wheel we'd point to for a first-year potter who wants a proper pedal and a trusted brand. You'll only outgrow it if your work gets big. See our pottery wheel for beginners picks for how it stacks up against other starter wheels.

Pros

  • 51 lb, light enough to move
  • Remote foot pedal and reversible motor
  • Automatic belt tensioning and overload breaker
  • Shimpo's 5-year warranty

Cons

  • 25 lb rating limits large work
  • 12-inch head
  • Belt drive is louder than the Whisper models

Where to buy: Shimpo sells the VL-Lite through ceramic dealers, not on Amazon. Amazon-available alternative: the Speedball Artista, which has the same 25 lb rating in a tabletop. Speedball lists a 1/3 HP motor, an 11-inch head, a 25 lb centering capacity, a 0–220 rpm hand control (the pedal is extra) and a 5-year warranty. Its direction is fixed by the right- or left-handed model you order.

Shimpo RK-Whisper: most compact direct drive

Who it's for: potters who want the Whisper motor in a shorter, more compact wheel, or studios that prefer a fixed pedal with a hand lever.

The RK-Whisper uses the same 1/2 HP (400 W) direct-drive brushless motor as the VL-Whisper, with the same 100 lb centering rating, 0–250 rpm and reversing. The differences are the frame and controls. Shimpo lists a 12-inch head drilled for bat pins, dimensions of 20 x 21 x 20 inches and a weight of 116 lb. Speed comes from a fixed foot pedal with a hand lever, so you can set a speed by hand and keep it.

Shimpo sells splash pans (one-piece and two-piece) and two sizes of add-on work table separately for the RK-Whisper. Budget for those. The same pacemaker and acidic-clay warnings apply.

Pros

  • Whisper motor and 100 lb rating in a compact frame
  • Hand lever lets you hold a set speed
  • Instant stop and banding-wheel mode
  • 12-inch head drilled for bat pins

Cons

  • Splash pan and work table sold separately
  • Smaller head than the VL-Whisper
  • Pacemaker warning applies

Where to buy: Shimpo sells the RK-Whisper through ceramic supply dealers, not on Amazon.

Shimpo Aspire: best tabletop Shimpo

Who it's for: small-space potters who throw small pieces, and anyone who needs hand control rather than a pedal.

The Aspire is Shimpo's tabletop wheel. Shimpo lists a 100 W DC motor, a 20 lb centering capacity, 0–230 rpm and a 7-inch alloy head with bat pins. It weighs 25 lb. Speed comes from a lever handle that Shimpo calls handicap accessible, and a foot pedal conversion kit is available. A one-piece twist-off splash pan and two bats come in the box.

Watch the rotation. The Aspire is standard counter-clockwise, and a clockwise version has to be ordered as such. Left-handed throwers should check before buying. For more small wheels, see our mini pottery wheel guide.

Pros

  • 25 lb and small enough for a kitchen table
  • Splash pan and two bats included
  • Lever control, with a pedal kit available
  • 5-year warranty

Cons

  • 7-inch head limits piece size
  • Rotation is fixed by the version you order
  • Pedal costs extra

Where to buy: the Aspire is sold through Shimpo dealers, not on Amazon. Amazon-available alternative: the Speedball Artista, a tabletop with a larger head and a higher rating. Speedball lists a 1/3 HP motor, an 11-inch head, a 25 lb centering capacity, a 0–220 rpm hand control (the pedal is extra) and a 5-year warranty. Its direction is fixed by the right- or left-handed model you order, much like the Aspire.

Shimpo strengths and weaknesses

Where Shimpo wins:

  • Direct drive. Brent's B, C and CXC all use a poly-V belt. Both Whisper models drive the head directly with a brushless motor, with no belt to wear.
  • Range. From a 25 lb tabletop to a 100 lb floor wheel, there's a Shimpo for most spaces.
  • Instant stop and banding-wheel mode on the Whispers, useful for trimming and decorating.

Where Shimpo falls short:

  • Warranty. Five years across the range, compared with 10 years on Brent and Speedball floor wheels.
  • Pacemaker warning on both Whisper models.
  • Accessories. Splash pans and tables are often sold separately, so compare total cost, not just the wheel.

Shimpo wheels are common in community studios, so used ones turn up regularly. Our used pottery wheel guide explains what to check on a direct-drive or belt-driven wheel before you pay.

Shimpo alternatives

Brent Model B. If you want the longest warranty and a wheel that resells easily, the Model B's 1/2 HP motor, 150 lb rating, 14-inch head and 10-year warranty make it the main rival to the VL-Whisper. Our Brent pottery wheel review covers the B, C and CXC.

Speedball Clay Boss. A full-size 14-inch wheel rated at 100 lb, with a 10-year warranty, usually for less than a VL-Whisper. It reverses with a plug rather than a switch.

Speedball Artista. The rival to the VL-Lite and Aspire, with an 11-inch head, a 25 lb rating and a 5-year warranty.

For the full field, see our best pottery wheel roundup. If you work a lot of hand-built pieces, a dedicated banding wheel is still useful even with the Whisper's free-spin mode.

How we chose

We didn't test these wheels in person. We used Shimpo's product pages for every spec, cross-checked them against dealer listings (NM Clay, The Ceramic Shop, Seattle Pottery Supply) and read recurring owner feedback in pottery communities. Where a dealer's figure disagreed with Shimpo's, we used Shimpo's.

FAQ

What is the difference between the Shimpo VL-Lite and VL-Whisper?

The VL-Whisper has a 1/2 HP (400 W) direct-drive brushless motor, a 14-inch head and a 100 lb centering rating, and weighs 120 lb. The VL-Lite has a 100 W belt-driven motor, a 12-inch head and a 25 lb rating, and weighs 51 lb. Both run 0 to 250 rpm from a foot pedal, reverse, and carry a 5-year warranty.

Is the Shimpo VL-Lite good for beginners?

Yes. Beginners usually throw 1 to 3 lb of clay at a time, well within the VL-Lite's 25 lb rating. It has a remote foot pedal, reverses for left-handed throwers, and at 51 lb it is light enough to move. You will outgrow it only if you start throwing large bowls, platters or tall vases.

Are Shimpo pottery wheels quiet?

The Whisper models are the quietest Shimpos. The VL-Whisper and RK-Whisper use a direct-drive brushless motor with no belt, which Shimpo describes as virtually quiet with no vibration. The VL-Lite is belt-driven and makes more noise, though Shimpo still calls it very quiet.

Can people with pacemakers use a Shimpo Whisper wheel?

Shimpo warns that the VL-Whisper and RK-Whisper may be harmful to a person who has a pacemaker and says to consult a physician before use. If that applies to you or someone in your studio, talk to a doctor first or choose a different wheel.

Does the Shimpo VL-Whisper come with a splash pan?

Shimpo's product page lists its 2-piece 19-inch splash pan as an accessory for the VL wheels rather than stating what is in the box, and inclusions vary by dealer bundle. Ask the seller whether a splash pan is included before you order.

Verdict

The VL-Whisper is the best Shimpo pottery wheel for a long-term home studio: 100 lb capacity, a 14-inch head and a quiet, beltless motor. The VL-Lite is the better buy for beginners and small spaces, as long as you're happy throwing small. Pick the RK-Whisper for Whisper power in a compact frame, and the Aspire if a tabletop is all you have room for.
